When Every Second of Voyage Data Matters


The Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) is often referred to as the "Black Box" of a vessel. It continuously records navigation data, bridge audio, radar information, AIS, GPS, alarms and many other operational parameters.

An equally important component of the VDR system is the Float-Free Recording Capsule (VDR EPIRB). During a marine casualty, this capsule automatically detaches from the vessel and preserves the last recorded voyage data for accident investigation.

Any alarm indicating failure of the float-free recording system requires immediate technical attention.

Marine Forte Enterprises was assigned to attend MT CETUS in Izmir, Turkey, following reports of a persistent VDR Float-Free alarm.


Danelec DM-100 VDR Float Free - The Initial Situation


Upon boarding, the bridge control panel immediately displayed active alarms related to the Float-Free Recording Capsule.

The VDR generated two critical alarms:

  • Float-Free Issue

  • Float-Free Cannot Find

These alarms indicated that communication between the Danelec DM-100 VDR and the Jotron Tron 40 Float-Free Recording Capsule had been interrupted.

The system was no longer able to monitor the condition of the recording capsule correctly.

Engineering Inspection

Our troubleshooting process began with a complete inspection of the float-free recording system.

Step 1 – Alarm Verification

The first task was confirming the active alarm from the bridge VDR display.

The bridge control panel clearly showed the active Float-Free alarms, allowing our engineer to verify that the problem was genuine rather than a temporary communication interruption.

Step 2 – Physical Inspection of the Float-Free Capsule

The Float-Free Recording Capsule located on the compass deck was carefully inspected.

The inspection included:

  • Capsule mounting

  • Docking module

  • Junction box

  • Cable entries

  • Mechanical locking mechanism

  • Power indication LEDs

The inspection confirmed that the capsule itself was properly installed.

Step 3 – Communication Testing

Using the Danelec service software, communication between the VDR Data Processing Unit and the Float-Free Recording Capsule was tested.

The communication path was traced from

  • DPU

  • Connection cable

  • Junction Box

  • Float-Free Capsule

This systematic approach allowed the faulty section to be isolated quickly.

The investigation confirmed that the failure was not within the recording capsule itself.

Instead, the fault was traced to:

  • Defective Float-Free Junction Box

  • Damaged Float-Free Connection Cable

The damaged communication path prevented the VDR from recognizing the Float-Free Capsule, resulting in continuous alarms.

This diagnosis matched the findings recorded during the onboard service.

Corrective Action

Marine Forte replaced:

✔ Float-Free Connection Cable (CAT-7)

After installation, the complete system was re-tested.

The Danelec DM-100 system underwent a complete functional verification.

The vessel's Master and crew were informed that the system had been fully restored.

The service report confirms the VDR was delivered back in proper operating condition without alarms.
